Learning the Ropes

On 3 February 2023, the SingHealth Residents' Committee (RC) – in collaboration with Singapore Medical Society of Australia and New Zealand (SMSANZ) and Singapore Medical Society Victoria (SMSV) – held its first-ever outreach programme at Academia. The programme was attended by 30 international medical graduates (IMG) who are about to embark on their Postgraduate Year One's (PGY1) journey in Singapore.

With the aim to ensure easier integration and assimilation into the local working environment, the outreach programme consisted of a half-day workshop where prospective PGY1s were able to learn more about procedural skills and brief Called to See Patients (CTSPs) such as arterial blood gas (ABG), indwelling catheter (IDC) insertion, blood cultures and intravenous (IV) cannulation – all of which are basic but essential skills that every PGY1 should know. Questions about life at SingHealth Residency were answered and networking opportunities were also available for prospective PGY1s.

"The PGY1 journey may be a steep learning curve but take heart – this period of training is beneficial for your growth and the safety of your patients."

"I personally found this outreach programme to be practical and useful for my work as a House Officer (HO) and beyond. While knowledge is mostly transferable, certain hands-on skills do vary from what we are used to in Australia due to differences in equipment and policies. Hence, being able to get some practice in prior to starting work certainly helped to smoothen my transition into PGY1's work in Singapore.

I hope the future batches of my fellow Australian medical graduates benefit from such a collaboration too!"
