Hear From Our Residents

"My experience with my mentors in the O&G Residency has been nothing short of spectacular. Everybody is very willing to teach and impart their clinical and surgical skills."

Being in the SingHealth Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) Residency for the past three years has literally got me on the edge of my seat. Not a single day in the residency is mundane due to the extremely varied clinical stations that we are rotated to in each year of our residency. You could be in the outpatient clinics one morning and then rushing to deliver a baby right in the afternoon!

This is truly what I appreciate about our residency programme - where we have the pride to declare ourselves as clinicians and surgeons. SingHealth also provides the necessary breadth and depth of cases across two different institutions - a treasure trove of hands-on, experiential learning.

Being in the O&G Residency programme also comes with the role of clinical tutor and supervisor to medical students and junior doctors. My mentors have also inspired me to pay it forward and I am very happy to be able to contribute actively to the education of future generation of healthcare professionals.

"One of the most valuable aspects of this residency programme is the sense of camaraderie among fellow residents. We've supported each other through the challenges and celebrated our successes together, creating lasting friendships and professional networks that I know will endure beyond residency."

I have had an incredible journey in Singhealth O&G residency. Building strong bonds with peers and mentors while honing my skills in obstetrics and gynaecology has been very rewarding. Not only have I always felt well supported with clinical work i.e. clinics, operating theatre, delivery suites and inpatient wards, I have also been well guided in non-clinical aspects like research and quality improvement projects.

Mentors that have guided me in residency continue to be my lifelong mentors professionally and in life in general. Overall, my time in the obstetrics and gynaecology residency programme has been transformative. I feel confident and well-equipped to embark on the next phase of my career as a registrar, thanks to the exceptional training and mentorship I've received.

"Not only does the residency programme equip me with the essential skills needed for my profession, it also provides a supportive environment for personal growth and development."

The SingHealth Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) Residency programme has been an invaluable experience. The curriculum boasts a strong foundation in general O&G, with early introduction to subspecialty training such as maternal-foetal medicine, reproductive medicine, minimally-invasive surgery, gynae-oncology, and urogynaecology.

As Singapore's largest O&G cluster, not only do we gain exposure to a diversity of cases of varying complexity, the high case volume ensures that we have adequate hands-on experience in our training. Apart from clinical work, we have a dedicated training programme that runs weekly. Through interactive workshops, clinical case studies, and simulations, I gained practical insights that I could immediately apply to my practice.

The esteemed faculty has been very encouraging, sharing their expertise, and inspiring us to push our limits. We are given ample opportunity to develop our interests beyond our clinical work - including research, leadership, and education. During my residency, I was given the chance to join the SingHealth Resident's Committee and contribute as a member of the KKH Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Faculty. Embarking on this residency has been a transformative journey that has far exceeded all my expectations.

"This legacy of learning formed the backbone of the SingHealth residency program and provided me an excellent center to learn, train and practice."

I have been working within SingHealth Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G) since 2016 before eventually getting into residency in 2019. My experiences within SingHealth and most importantly within O&G have been at times humbling, in parts enlightening but ultimately satisfying.

It means a lot to me to have been part of this long and grueling training to be an O&G specialist, but I can say it means just as much, if not more, to those around me during the journey. My many mentors in both KKH and SGH, my peers in residency, fellow medical officers, and even nurses and non-medical staff within KKH and SGH – they have been part of my growth and will continue to have a huge say in how I grow as both an O&G doctor and a person.

Residency afforded me an opportunity to learn, and I was able to learn and practice across the entire SingHealth board of hospitals – mentors and hospital staff alike were invested in my learning and all chipped in to provide a holistic and well-rounded training program. Not only did I learn from established doctor mentors and keen seniors but also nurses, dieticians, physiotherapists, and staff outside the O&G specialty.

"I am thankful to have made the decision to join SingHealth Residency and continue to look forward to this journey in becoming an O&G specialist."

Being a part of the SingHealth O&G Residency Programme has been an enriching and fulfilling experience thus far. The seniors in O&G remain dedicated in teaching and nurturing the next generation of O&G specialists by imparting their knowledge and skills, just as their seniors have done for them.

The Residency Programme has been carefully structured to ensure that we have a strong foundation in general O&G followed by early exposure to the different subspecialties. The department is also always seeking to improve and hold several townhalls a year to hear from its residents.

Being able to rotate through two different hospitals allows us to be exposed to a large variety of patients, and the caseload enables us to hone our surgical skills.
