1. Do I have to do a posting in Geriatric Medicine before applying? What other postings would be helpful other than Geriatric posting?
During your IM residency, you will have the opportunity to do one month in Geriatric medicine in which you will be exposed to patients with various geriatric syndromes and how to manage their care. You are highly encouraged to do at least 1 month posting in Geriatric Medicine. Should you have an opportunity to, other postings that might help you in GRM residency would include that of palliative medicine- this would help you improve management of symptoms, communication and end of life care. Your rotation in neurology would be beneficial in understanding neurocognitive disorders and other neurological conditions that are prevalent in older adults as well.
2. How do I increase my chances of being accepted?
Work well with others and work with heart. Ultimately, we are looking for candidates who have a good work ethic, are able to work well with other healthcare professionals and genuinely care for the older adults!
