Figuring Things Out: Making Graphic Elements Work In Your Journal Manuscript

We often pay a lot of attention to the text when writing a manuscript for a journal, but do not give the same amount of attention to the graphic elements (tables, graphs and other illustrations). This workshop is intended to assist beginning researchers understand the principles of constructing effective graphic elements for your journal manuscript, as well as the common ethical issues associated with the preparation of figures. The workshop consists of two hours of instruction.

Learning Objectives

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Basic principles of a good graphic element
  • How to construct effective tables and graphs
  • Difference between vector and bitmap graphics
  • Optimal file formats to use when preparing vector and bitmap images
  • Ethical issues associated with the preparation of images


At the end of the workshop, attendees should understand the basic principles of creating effective graphic elements, as well as the optimal formats for saving image files obtained from imaging devices

Target Audience

Administrators, clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals starting out in scientific research and preparing a manuscript for submission to a journal.

Dr Ng Heok Hee

About the Trainer:
Heok Hee is currently the managing editor for the Proceedings of Singapore Healthcare. He received his PhD in Biology from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has extensive experience in research and scientific writing. He has published 200 papers in scientific journals, six chapters in five books, and 25 articles for popular magazines.
