Ethics of Incentivizing Participation in Research

Date: 24 October 2024 | Time: 0900 - 1000

Speaker: Prof Julian Savulescu

In this presentation, Prof Savulescu will argue that we should pay research participants more than is currently allowed and that high payments can be ethically justified. He will examine the concepts of coercion, exploitation and undue influence and show that none preclude high payments. In fact, lower payments exploit participants.

Participant deserves and benefits from higher payments, or shares in profit from research. Prof Savulescu will describe a novel payment for risk model and apply this challenge studies. He will provide an algorithm for incentives in research.
