Each year, about 210 million women become pregnant and about 140 million newborn babies are delivered. The sheer scale of maternal health issues makes maternal well-being a leading global public health challenge. Dr Sharon Foo, the eternal optimist, believes that this generation of world leaders and health care professionals have the opportunity to achieve real, lasting progress.

Dr Foo has always had an interest in global health. She was involved in organising a global health initiative in Khon Khean, Thailand during her medical school days in University College London. She spent her elective months working on a maternal and child health project in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, on a scholarship from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Long-term sustainability has often been quoted as an issue in global health initiatives and she is excited to share about the model being used in Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia, to improve maternal morbidity and mortality in a resource poor region.
