2) Flourishing Lives: Preventing Burnout through Self-Care
|

Time: 9.00am - 5.00pm
|
|
Venue: Academia, Level 1, L1-S1
|

The work of healthcare professionals is often physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging. Often times, while caring for others, we neglect to care for ourselves. Burnout is therefore a common phenomenon among healthcare professionals, and can have negative impacts on social, emotional, and occupational functioning. This course introduces the concept of self-care, which is important in maintaining well-being and preventing burnout. Participants will learn to recognise signs of burnout, and learn various methods and skills to improve well-being and strengthen relationships. Concepts and techniques from Positive Psychology will be applied and taught through experiential exercises and personal reflections. Sleep, another integral contributor to well-being, will also be covered. Participants will learn about sleep hygiene, relaxation skills, and other techniques to help them achieve a good night’s rest.
Who should attend:
-
For healthcare providers as well as administrative staff who work in the healthcare sector.

|
|
Venue: Academia, Level 1, L1-S1

About the Workshop:
-
This workshop is designed for health care professionals interested in exploring power relations and interprofessional dynamics in the workplace. Through short didactics and guided discovery, participants will become familiar with theoretical concepts and research approaches designed to make visible how power relations affect interprofessional education and practice. The workshop will begin with a short overview of the critical research paradigm and common methodological approaches for thinking about the effects of power in health care contexts. Through a variety of guided discovery exercises, participants will learn to identify literature relevant to exploring interprofessional dynamics and to formulate research questions for exploring power relations and their effects on interprofessional learning and practice in the workplace. The second part of the workshop will immerse participants in the application of three theoretical concepts and their relevance to the field of interprofessional education and practice. Didactic components will be supplemented with small group exercises and large group discussion. Participants will be encouraged to draw on their respective experience as researchers and health care practitioners to consider the applicability of these concepts in the study of relevant contemporary health care problems and issues in Singapore.

About the Workshop:
-
Teaching and learning of procedures and/ or surgical operations involves development of knowledge, psychomotor and cognitive skills. Simulation improves patient safety as it allows learning and practice away from the patient, so task trainers are often used to aid skills development. Task trainers may be used to teach basic skills (e.g. suturing sets, intubation models, catheter insertion models) or more advanced surgical skills (e.g. laparoscopic box trainers, computerised endoscopy units, animal and/or cadaveric models). Optimal use of task trainers in skills development involves using effective teaching methods in a well-designed curriculum that is integrated with the overall curriculum for the learners.
Who should attend:
-
For faculty who are responsible for creating programmes for development of procedural or surgical skills in their learners and those who teach procedural and/or surgical skills using task trainers.
