Advanced Internal Medicine Residency Programme

Synonym(s):

About the Programme

An Internal Medicine (IM) physician sees a large variety of patients with different symptoms, signs and diagnoses. The work is always challenging and satisfying, and the day is never boring.

With population growth and ageing, and the ramping up of medical services in Singapore, IM physicians are expected to be in high demand. A wealth of career options awaits you: choose to work in academic centres, emerging new general hospitals, or in inpatient as well as outpatient settings. There is much room for growth and creativity in finding ways to improve health and healthcare, whether in clinical medicine, medical education, research, innovation, or health systems work.

We value lifelong curiosity and learning, collaborative interprofessional work, integrity and compassion, and we want people who share our ethos of putting patients at the heart of everything we do. If this sounds like you, we welcome you to join the SingHealth Advanced Internal Medicine Senior Residency Programme.

Message from the Programme Director

We want to prepare our Senior Residents to face the medical and interpersonal challenges they will encounter in today’s complex healthcare environment.

Our approach will emphasise these main areas: clinical excellence, where Residents receive rigorous training in diagnosis, treatment, and patient management; professionalism, where they learn the importance of ethics, communication, and collaboration; and wellness and resilience, so they are supported in developing skills to handle the pressures of medicine without losing their passion or compassion.

Dr Woong Liling Natalie

Programme Director, Advanced Internal Medicine
Senior Consultant, Department of Internal Medicine, Singapore General Hospital (SGH)

Why Choose Advanced Internal Medicine?

Hone Your Clinical Skills in Internal Medicine

Guided by senior clinicians, you will hone your diagnostic and clinical management capabilities through a combination of patient exposure, application of evidence-based medicine and regular case discussions with colleagues and seniors. You will also learn how to provide patient-centric care and participate in projects to improve healthcare delivery in our institutions.

Well-rounded Exposure and Skills

To prepare you for future roles as an Internal Medicine specialist, you will be given educational, research, administrative and leadership responsibilities within the departments. You may decide to pursue further interests in medical subspecialty training, or develop your career in medical education, research, innovation, informatics or health systems administration and leadership.

Opportunity for Overseas and Local Attachments

We believe in independent thinking and opening our Residents’ minds to the practice of medicine in different settings. All Residents will embark on cross-cluster rotations with Singapore’s other healthcare clusters. You will have the opportunity to choose clinical electives in local hospitals or community settings to broaden your experience of how healthcare is delivered in Singapore.

Experienced and Dedicated Faculty

Our highly experienced and dedicated Faculty believes in passing on the right medical knowledge, expertise and values to the next generation to help you achieve your full potential. Many of our Faculty members have trained and grown up in SingHealth institutions. We invest in your growth as a person, not just a doctor; and train you with the view of your joining our family.

Your Career Prospects & Development

Upon successful completion of the two-year programme and the exit examination by the Specialists Accreditation Board, Singapore, you will be a certified Internal Medicine specialist.

When you join SingHealth, you will be appointed as an Associate Consultant and will have the option of developing your career in four tracks: Clinician Practitioner, Clinician Educator, Clinician Researcher and Clinician Administrator.

You can also look forward to a myriad of career opportunities in clinical care, education, research, and administration within our institution.

Some of you may choose to pursue a second Senior Residency in a subspecialty. When you complete the second Senior Residency, you will be dual-accredited and qualified to work as a specialist in both disciplines.
