About the Programme
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the developed world. As a cardiologist, you will have the opportunity to help many patients, be it saving the life of a heart attack patient with primary coronary intervention or improving the quality of life of a heart failure patient.
The field of cardiovascular medicine is also one of the most exciting. Hardly a week goes by without multiple research studies being published in the top medical journals in the world. In addition, the medical technology industry in cardiology is amongst the most robust in the world, with new technologies and devices being developed continuously.
Working in the Department of Cardiology is fast-paced, intellectually stimulating and exciting. You will need to think fast and keep calm. If you enjoy working in a team, are willing to learn, value integrity and have good interpersonal skills, we welcome you to join the SingHealth Cardiology Senior Residency Programme.
Message from the Programme Director
I am delighted that you are considering joining the SingHealth Cardiology Senior Residency Programme.
The programme is a robust, dynamic training programme that includes the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS), the Changi General Hospital (CGH) and the Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) departments of Cardiology.
Combined, the three hospitals treat a large volume of patients and offer a complete range of clinical services and specialties. The programme also has wonderful teachers and mentors, exciting research opportunities and most importantly, a warm nurturing culture for you to grow professionally and personally.
Cardiology is one of the most exciting fields in medicine. At NHCS, CGH and SKH, you will have the opportunity to work with world-class researchers and scientists and see your research translate into clinical care.
Our training philosophy is simple. We want you to do well and succeed as a person, physician and cardiologist. That’s why we strive to provide the best training possible for you in an atmosphere of collegiality, shared responsibility and professionalism; so that in turn, you may provide the best care possible for our patients.
Clin Asst Prof Loh Xingyuan Julian Kenrick (w.e.f. July 2024)
Programme Director, Cardiology
Consultant, Cardiology, NHCS
Why Choose Cardiology?
Exposure to Cutting-edge Medicine
As the leading local healthcare group, SingHealth handles the largest clinical volume in Singapore. You will have the opportunity to manage and treat a broad range of cardiovascular diseases. At NHCS, you will also be exposed to advanced, cutting edge therapies such as cardiac transplant, left ventricular assist devices, atrial fibrillation ablation therapy, renal denervation, and structural heart disease interventions such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation and the MitraClip procedures.
Depth and Breadth of Clinical Rotations
The NHCS sees the largest volume and most comprehensive range of patients with cardiovascular diseases in Singapore. Together with CGH and SKH, which provides healthcare to the Eastern and Northeastern parts of Singapore, the three institutions on the Programme provides tremendous clinical exposure for our Residents.
Renowned Faculty and Research Opportunities
We have a talented pool of Faculty who are recognised leaders in the cardiovascular field.
You will have many opportunities to participate in clinical and translational research and develop your scientific inquiry skills under their mentorship and pursue research as your career with our full support.
Your Career Prospects & Development
The SingHealth Cardiology Senior Residency Programme is accredited by ACGME-International. With this mark of distinction, Senior Residents can expect numerous career opportunities upon completion of the Programme, including promotion to Associate Consultant.
You can also look forward to further training in a subspecialty, such as interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, advanced heart failure, adult congenital heart diseases, echocardiography and advanced imaging modalities.
With a fast-ageing population requiring more clinical care, your training and clinical skills will be heavily sought after.
