Prof Tan Hak Koon is the Designated Institutional Official, SingHealth Residency and the Academic Chairman of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Academic Clinical Programme, SingHealth Duke-NUS.
Prof Tan is also the Chairman and Chief of Obstetrics, Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, KKH. He was the President of the College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists Singapore (COGS) from 2013 to 2015.
Dr Ong Biauw Chi graduated from the NUS and obtained her Master of Medicine in Anaesthesia with the gold medal award from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. She did her fellowship training in Cardiac Anaesthesia in Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital. She was the team lead in the separation of the Nepalese Craniopagus twins (2001) and the Iranian Craniopagus twins (2003).
Dr Ong is interested in teaching, mentoring and training. She was involved in starting the course for post basic nurses in peri-anaesthesia with Nanyang Polytechnic to further advance the role and professional development of the nurses in anaesthesia. Dr Ong was named best mentor by SingHealth medical officers and was recently named Master Academic Clinician.
Dr Ong is Chair of the Examination committee in Anaesthesia and is now Chair of the RAC for Anaesthesiology. She was the previous head of the Anaesthesiology department, and Director of Patient Safety and Clinical Governance. She has held several National Medical Research council grants and various other research grants and keenly supports and promotes research and education activities. She was awarded the National Medical Excellence Award as Quality Activist and also the National Day Public Administration Silver Medal. She was named Women of the Year 2020 for her work with the dormitories during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ms Nur Suhaila, Senior Executive in Medicine ACP since April 2020, began her career in SingHealth in the Graduate Medical Education (GME) office where she was the Programme Executive and Team Lead of the Internal Medicine Programme and Rheumatology Senior Residency Programme. She was then appointed as the Cluster Representative of the Residency Programmes in Medicine ACP. Driven by her passion to make a difference, Ms Suhaila hopes to continue playing an important role as an administrator in Medical Education and Medical Humanities.
Ms Alice Tan has been with SingHealth Residency since its inception in 2010. Over the past 10 years, she has gained extensive experience in financial planning, ensuring financial resources are used optimally through cost management and effective budget utilisation. As the department training coordinator, she coordinates and provides support to over 100 staff on their learning needs. Alice also contributes to implementing best practices for improving work performance and quality in GME Finance. Her project “Productivity and Efficiency in GME Finance” won the first prize in the finance category at the Singapore Healthcare Management Congress 2016.
Ms Kassie Tan joined SingHealth Residency (GME Headquarters) in 2017. Over the years, she has gained experience in the field of staff recognition and engagement, liaising and managing processes pertinent to various staff awards and nominations with the relevant organisers. In 2020, the GME Admin team launched the GME Wellness and Engagement Framework, which is a consolidated platform within residency to provide continued physiological and psychological care for residency administrators through various engagement programmes and activities. Kassie is one of the main coordinators for the organisation of these well-being activities.
Ms Joanna Mak joined SingHealth Residency in its early days in 2011. Her first project was to provide infrastructure support in the relocation of GME office from SGH to an office that she newly set up at Old Duke-NUS campus, with minimal operational disruptions. Joanna subsequently successfully coordinated another office move and renovations at Connection One office.
Besides providing human resource, operational and asset management support to GME Office, she also plays an important role as a department representative in all aspects of Emergency Preparedness e.g. Environmental Health & Safety coordinator, certified First Aider, Secondary Call tree coordinator. With the pandemic, Joanna has also been appointed as the department Safe Management Officer since 2020 to support all matters regarding safe management measures for GME Office.
Mr Joseph Li is the current Team Lead of the SingHealth Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) Programme. He joined SingHealth Graduate Medical Education (GME) office in 2011 and had previously supported the Otolaryngology Residency Programme and the Transitional Year Residency Programme.
Ms Wan Ching Ming started her graduate medical education journey in 2010 as the Programme Executive for Diagnostic Radiology Residency Programme and is currently the Assistant Institutional Coordinator for SingHealth Residency. While work is all serious matter, being someone who likes fun, nothing really stops her from cracking a joke in the middle of discussion (just to lighten the mood!). She believes in playing as hard as you work because life is both short and long.
Mr Romano Soliano is the Senior Programme Executive for SG IP Neurosurgery and SHS Neurosurgery Surgery Residency Programme. He joined SingHealth Residency back in May 2014, managing both Neurology NNI and SGH Senior Residency Programme. Romano is also the Cluster Representative for Family Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Neuroscience Programmes. At the Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (APMEC) 2021, Romano was a finalist in the Free Communications Presentation Session for his first author abstract titled ‘Faculty Development Academic Tracking System’ – a project he initiated to improve the management and participation of Neuroscience Faculty in Faculty Development.
Ms Joey Thee joined SingHealth Residency in August 2014, and is the Programme Executive for SG IP Plastic Surgery and SHS Hand Surgery Residency Programme. She is the co-author of paper “Hand Surgery Training: Advanced Specialty Training Programme vs Residency Programme” which was presented as a poster at the 17th Ottawa Conference in March 2016. She is also a recipient of the FY2020 You Shine Award, presented as a recognition of the service and contribution made at work.
Mr Ismail Muhamad has been the Team Lead of the Family Medicine Residency Programme since 2019. During his 9 years in Residency, he had been a Programme Executive (PE) in the Anaesthesiology programme, a solo PE in the Endocrinology Programme (Senior Residency) and a team lead in the Internal Medicine programme. In addition to being innovative and resourceful in his approach to problems, Ismail is also people-oriented, earning him his team mates’ trust as a dependable leader.
Ms Lovein Teo is the associate executive of Medical Oncology Residency Programme. With six years of experience in Residency, she has gained extensive experience and soft skills that helped in elevating her career. Her resilience empowered her to take on challenges at work and overcome them. Lovein also believes in continuous learning and improving to achieve a better self. She bases her life on Mr Walt Disney’s quote, “All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them”.
Mr Samad bin As'ad is the EduTech team lead in the Centre for Resident and Faculty Development. He leads the team in various key IT-related projects in SingHealth Residency, from managing data to developing, implementing and over-seeing different applications and systems used by GME. He has also been the main driver of the Residency Management System since 2010. He advocates the use of technology to improve work processes and passionately pushes boundaries to overcome hurdles to these projects.
Ms Nicole Tan is the Team Lead of the Anaesthesiology Residency Programme. Throughout the years, she has gained much from working with various stakeholders within the programme and between departments. She believes that learning abounds in interactions and experiences, and maintains a sense of positivity and an open mind in identifying such opportunities.
Ms Emilie Kueh is a Programme Executive from the Anaesthesiology Residency Programme. One of her interests is in exploring how digitalisation can be integrated into the programme, as she believes that we can greatly benefit from leveraging on technology in our daily work.
Dr Andrew Ong is a Consultant Gastroenterologist from Singapore General Hospital. He is currently the Programme Director of SingHealth Gastroenterology Residency Programme, and also the Deputy Director for Faculty Development in Medicine Academic Clinical Programme (ACP), SingHealth. His current interests in medical education include faculty development, mentoring, and assessment designs.
Developing Professional Resilience Through Reflective Practice
Assoc Prof Goy is a Senior Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Campus Education Director (Postgraduate Education) at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He obtained his postgraduate certification (Master of Medicine Anaesthesia, Singapore and Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists) in 2003, and Masters of Health Professions Education (Maastricht) in 2017. His medical education research interests include reflective learning and practice, complex learning, work-based assessment, and feedback. A/Prof Goy is a member of the SingHealth Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) Taskforce.
Dr Edwin Low is currently Director, Programme Development, SingHealth Office of Regional Health, having relinquished his appointment as Group Director, Regional Health System in May 20. He is concurrently a Fellow at the HealthCare Leadership College and Adj Assoc Professor in the Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Sciences Academic Clinical Programme (ACP).
Dr Low joined SingHealth in 2005 as Director in the Office of Chairman Medical Board where he set up the clinical governance framework as its inaugural Director of Clinical Governance. He went on to become the National Medical Research Council’s first Executive Director to revamp the clinical research landscape with the increased biomedical funding allocated to MOH. Thereafter, he returned to SingHealth to implement Academic Medicine as the Group Director of Academic Medicine, concurrently holding the appointment of Group Director, Strategic Human Resource. He returned to the civil service to head the newly established Biomedical Sciences Executive Committee (BMS Exco) Planning and Coordination office at National Research Foundation before returning to SingHealth as the Group Director, Regional Health System in 2015.
Prior to joining SingHealth, Dr Low served more than 20 years in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) where he last served as the Chief Naval Medical Officer. During his SAF service, he was deployed to the Baguio and Meulaboh earthquake disaster relief mission and Operation Desert Storm.
Dr Denise Lim is currently an Associate Consultant with the Department of Anaesthesiology at Singapore General Hospital. She was previously the Chief Resident of the Singhealth Anaesthesiology Residency and has a keen interest in medical education. She is also a member of the Patient Safety Council of the Singapore General Hospital.
Dr Marcus Lee is an Associate Consultant with the Department of Emergency Medicine at Singapore General Hospital. He previously led as the Chief Resident in the Singhealth Emergency Medicine Residency and won the Inspiring Resident-Educator Award in 2021. A strong believer that "as one teaches, one learns”, Dr Lee views education as a win-win process benefiting both the teacher and student. He is also an advocate for a safe learning environment in medical education.
Dr Kalpana Vijaykumar is currently a Service Senior Resident with the Department of Surgery at Sengkang General Hospital. She was previously the Chief Resident of the SingHealth General Surgery Residency and has a keen interest in medical education and welfare. She was also a work group member for SingHealth Strategic Retreat 2021 Group 3 and has been in the Cluster Seamless Care Standing Committee. Dr Vijaykumar has received awards for her contributions to education and continues to help her peers and juniors.
