SingHealth Duke-NUS Sport and Exercise Medicine Conference

Organised by SingHealth Duke-NUS Sport & Exercise Medicine Centre (SDSC), the inaugural SingHealth Duke-NUS Sport and Exercise Medicine Conference aims to bring together health care professionals from a wide range of specialities to share knowledge and encourage learning and research within sport and exercise medicine fraternity.

The theme for this conference is "Physical Activity – The New Vital Sign: Systematic Exercise Intervention in the Chronic Disease Paradigm".

Taking place on 6 March 2021 via Zoom webinar, we are expecting a turnout of more than 400 participants including family physicians, orthopedic surgeons, oncologists, endocrinologists, obstetricians and gynaecologists, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, dietitians and of course, sport and exercise physicians. The conference is supported by - Sports Medicine Association Singapore (SMAS).

WELCOME MESSAGE BY HEAD, SDSC

The SingHealth Duke-NUS Sport & Exercise Medicine Centre (SDSC) was established in 2017 as a SingHealth cluster-wide initiative to integrate various disciplines in the areas of training, research and clinical service, ultimately providing patients with comprehensive Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM) care.

Musculoskeletal disorders have been reported as the top cause of health issues related to non-fatal diseases in 2017. The inaugural Sport & Exercise Medicine Conference brings together pockets of SEM expertise from across the whole cluster, to collectively discuss the prevention and management of musculoskeletal disorders, so that our patients can remain physically active and enjoy a higher quality of life. In conjunction with the World Health Organisation's global action plan on physical activity launched in late 2018, the conference theme, "Physical Activity - The New Vital Sign: Systematic Exercise Intervention in the Chronic Disease Paradigm", will focus on the importance of physical activity to improve one's mental health, quality of life and well-being, as well as reduce the risk of and in managing chronic diseases.

I welcome you to join us on this journey of learning as we move beyond healthcare to health.

Best regards
A/Prof Benedict Tan
Head, SingHealth Duke-NUS Sport & Exercise Medicine Centre

WELCOME MESSAGE BY ORGANISING CHAIRPERSON

On behalf of the organising committee, we are delighted to welcome you to the virtual SingHealth Duke-NUS Sport & Exercise Medicine Conference 2021. Given the restrictions in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to shift our conference online. This offers us new benefits, such as greater accessibility to the expertise of our healthcare colleagues all around the world. We expect to welcome over 400 healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds, including family physicians, orthopaedic surgeons and obstetricians and gynaecologists, oncologists, endocrinologists, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, dietitians and many more! It will truly be a meeting of minds and expertise within the Sport and Exercise Medicine community, as we seek to better integrate care for our patients.

There will be three tracks in the main conference, focusing on global initiatives in the promotion of exercise, the role of exercise in oncology, as well as obstetrics and gynaecology. The speakers for each of these tracks are well-known in their fields, and I am sure that we will be greatly enriched by their insights. Sessions will also be presented in a variety of formats, with real-time interaction with the presenters. We look forward to a time of rich discussion and fruitful learning at the conference!

Best regards,
Dr Zhang Jiajia, Mandy
