Is There a Role for AI in Ethics Review?

Date: 23 October 2024 | Time: 1010 - 1110

Speaker: Prof Ng Yih Yng

2022 was the year that Generative AI became mainstream – just about anyone and everyone has heard of ChatGPT, and most have even used it themselves. The idea that AI could do the job of reviewing the ethics of research involving human may sound ludicrous because drawing the line between what is ethical and un-ethical is one of the most human things possible. Yet, we have seen examples of ChatGPT writing very ‘thoughtful’ letters and providing highly ‘empathetic’ responses to challenging situations.

This talk aims to dissect the components of what goes into an ethics review, the brief discussion about Large Language Models and finally to contextualise what sort of roles technology can play strategically to improve things and also highlight what it is not appropriate for the current maturity of AI and a look towards the future.
