Nimble - AI Cannulation
Track Type: Symposium | Date: 20 October 2023, Friday| Time: 1540 - 1555 | Speaker: Ms Choh Chau Lin Andrea
Intravenous (IV) Cannulation is an essential procedure which requires knowledge, critical thinking, good decision making, good communication skills (to put the patient at ease) and dexterity skill of the learner. It is important for the learner to experience tactile feedback when inserting a cannula during training, i.e., mimicking the real act, so that the learner would know if their technique of inserting the cannula is correct and that they have made appropriate assessments and decisions.
A team of nurses from Singapore General Hospital built a prototype, called NIMBLE IV cannulation, that leveraged on game technology (incorporating a virtual standard patient and granular game interaction data visualisation), smart pressure sensors and advanced 3D printed material to develop a comprehensive intravenous cannulation training solution. The solution provides the play-learner an immersive gameplay which reflects the real-life scenario in a clinical setting. The solution was tested, and results showed that new hires trained with NIMBLE IV cannulation had a higher success rate (76.9%) of subsequent cannulation as compared with another group of new hires trained the conventional way.
