The Wound Care Innovation for the Tropics (WCIT) programme is a first-of-its-kind research programme in the world to focus on wound care in tropical climates. Chronic non-healing wounds (diabetic foot ulcers, pressure injuries and venous leg ulcers) disproportionately affects the elderly. We now know that chronic wounds affect ~12,000 inpatients in Singapore, with an incidence rate of as high as 4200 per 100,000 for those age above 80. The costs of chronic wound are also large – with total annual costs of illness estimated to be $350 million.
