Home Palliative Care from Nursing Perspective

Track Type: Symposium | Date: 20 October 2023, Thursday| Time: 1150 - 1205 | Speaker: Ms Ng Wan Ru

High quality palliative care should be accessible in all care settings. An important end-of-life preference for most patients is to receive palliative care in the comfort of their home which instinctively may also be the preferred place of death for some.

Home palliative care nurses, in their autonomous roles, collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines to provide patient-centred and family-focused care. This dedicated team focuses not only on end-of-life issues, but also seek to make the remaining days of the patient meaningful.

Home palliative nurses need to be equipped with a repertoire of skill sets to manage the physical symptoms, psycho-social and spiritual needs of the patients and their families. Through the many accounts of journeys with these patients and their families, these nurses mentioned in their reflective learning that they had not only developed resilience but had also been enriched and transformed through caring for their terminally ill patients.
