Dignifying Death and Dying: Supporting Terminally ill Patients and their Caregivers with Family Dignity Intervention (FDI)
Track Type: Symposium | Date: 20 October 2023, Friday| Time: 1205 - 1220 | Speaker: Assoc Prof Ho Hau Yan Andy
Protecting and promoting patient dignity at the end of life is an indispensable goal of palliative care in the modern era. However, dignity is a value-laden construct that can be experienced differently across cultures and social contexts. This presentation provides an overview of the conceptual foundations of dignity at the end of life; with an emphasis on examining the parallel and contrasting experiences of dignifying psycho-socio-spiritual care in both Western and Asian societies. It will also present the clinical framework and empirical findings of a randomized control trial of Family Dignity Intervention (FDI), which has been found to be highly effective in elevating Singaporean terminally ill patients and their family caregivers’ mental health, spiritual wellbeing, and quality of life in the face of loss and mortality. Implications on the application of FDI for enhancing holistic palliative care and augmenting advance care planning will be discussed.
