Communicating with People with Moderate to Severe Dementia Does Lie Telling Support Personhood

Communicating with People with Moderate to Severe Dementia: Does Lie Telling Support Personhood?

Track Type: Symposium | Date: 19 October 2023, Thursday| Time: 1440 - 1455 | Speaker: Asst Prof Jane Murray

Previous literature states that telling lies to a person with dementia is part of a malignant social psychology (Kitwood, 1997). This ground-breaking research demonstrates that by entering the patients reality and going with their truth, rather than our own, we can maintain personhood much more effectively. The truth of the carer should not overrule that of the person with dementia. In cases where telling the truth is likely to cause distress, lie telling can be a useful and effective person-centred intervention.
