A PaL to Lean On
Track Type: Symposium | Date: 21 October 2023, Saturday| Time: 1135 - 1150 | Speaker: Ms Wong Yoke Ping
Nurses are bearing witness to suffering while managing dying patients and their families. They are exposed to greater emotional burden if the palliative patients are their colleagues or own family members. Sometimes, nurses in healthcare self-imposed an expectation to help guide and make difficult decisions especially to their significant others. As the saying goes “the more you care, the more it hurts”.
This presentation will share stories of people we care and how knowledge in palliative care can help to build confidence, respecting the person’s preference and dealing with emotions to build resilience. We share how palliative care nurses can be a PaL to lean on as a peer supporter, providing post incidents dialogues and share strategies for self-care in this meaningful work.
