Leaving is not a choice – as man, we face inevitable death. But leaving well is a choice. We choose how we want to leave by the values, life experiences and relationships that matter to us. Deciding what matters and how much it matters would then shape how we live. Hence, leaving well is fundamentally about living well. Leaving or living is experienced in real, concrete everyday moments. When we, as healthcare workers, are present in these moments with our patients, we learn to see their pains and their hearts. We discover the profound simplicity of the care that they require. In the face of death then, what responsibilities do patients and families have? What responsibilities do healthcare workers have?
