Dr Stewart is a Board Certified Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician at Baylor Scott & White – Hillcrest Medical Center, where he also serves as Vice Chief of the Medical Staff, and Medical Director of Quality. Dr Stewart also serves as Faculty for the Academy of Communication in Healthcare, which focuses on promoting better healthcare outcomes by enhancing communication skill. He is a Clinical Site Director of Critical Care Medicine. He also teaches all medical staff in evidence-based communication skills that improve health outcomes.

He has worked with the American College of Chest Physicians to develop and promote the First 5 Minutes to bring evidence-based communication to a broad healthcare audience. He works to develop the catalogue of curriculum for communication that enhances feedback, provider coaching and promotes diversity in healthcare for Baylor Scott & White Health.

HM10 - Building Trust and Respect with Relationship Centered Communication

Patients who experience compassionate care are able to connect more meaningfully with their care providers and healthcare system. Relationship centered communication gets to the heart of what we do by building trust through a meaningful relationship. Available strong data has shown that:

A meaningful connection between patients and their healthcare team reduces incidence of errors and risks of malpractice.
Patients who enjoy a mutually trusting relationship with their healthcare team are more likely to be adherent with the medical plan and are more understanding when there is a gap in care received.

HM17 - Implementing the Language of Compassion by Sharing a Common Purpose with our Patients – A Health System’s Experience

Baylor Scott & White is the largest healthcare system in the state of Texas, United States and comprises 50 hospitals. Seven years ago, it implemented a Relationship Centered Communication programme called the Art of Communication developed with the American Academy of Communication in Healthcare (ACH). Dr Stewart will share his unique experience of implementing, growing and adapting this programme to meet the needs of their healthcare professionals, and will also show the successful outcomes which included the improvement in patient experience and key safety data.
