Co-Director of SIMS, Professor Fatimah Lateef is highly passionate about simulation, having actively trained healthcare professionals to attain mastery of skills and situations.

She is also Senior Consultant, Director of Undergraduate Training and Education as well as Director of Clinical Service and Quality at the Department of Emergency Medicine, Singapore General Hospital. In addition to her role as Adjunct Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and Yong Loo Lin Medical School, National University of Singapore, she teaches part-time at the School of Health Sciences, Nanyang Polytechnic. Her areas of sub-specialisation include Pre-Hospital Care Medicine, as well as Cardiovascular and Neurovascular Emergencies. She also leads various leadership groups, grooming youths and doctors to excel, which also ties into her role as a core faculty nurturing residents in Emergency Medicine.

As a strong advocate of lifelong learning and empowerment, she has presented more than 600 abstracts at international conferences and published over 180 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. She is an active volunteer in the area of International Humanitarian Medicine and Acute Disaster Response, where she has led teams to countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Myammar, Africa, Indonesia and China for various causes and assistance. For her work across various fields, she has won a range of awards, such as Excellent Scientific Publication Award (2001), Best Teacher Award (2002), Good Mentor Award, SingHealth (2005), Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching, NUS (2008), Singapore Medical Journal Recognition Award for Review with Distinction (2007-2014), Critical Talent Retention Award, SingHealth, and The Academy of Medicine, Gold Reviewer Award (2011), Excellent Educator Award 2015, amongst others.

Co-Director of SIMS, Professor Fernando Bello works at the intersection of medicine, education and technology, with a background in computer science and engineering, and over twenty years’ experience in Technology Enhanced Learning and Simulation within a healthcare setting.

He obtained his PhD in Biomedical Systems from Imperial College London, where he is Professor of Surgical Computing and Simulation Science within the Department of Surgery and Cancer. In August 2019, he joined Duke-NUS Medical School as a Professor and Associate Dean for Technology Enhanced Learning and Innovation within the Office of Education, to develop and implement a school-wide Technology Enhanced Learning strategy that promotes educational excellence, curriculum enhancement and pedagogical innovation.

His research interests include the use of virtual / mixed reality environments and haptics in the context of education and training. He has pioneered advanced patient specific simulation of several surgical procedures and clinical examinations, online and mobile simulation tools, as well as innovative approaches to contextualised simulation. He has been involved in several simulation-based training programmes in the UK and abroad and has published widely in technological, as well as medical and educational journals. He regularly serves as a reviewer for international journals, charitable foundations, and national science organisations.

Dr Chong Shin Yuet is a Senior Consultant at the Department of Anaesthesiology in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and is in charge of the SGH Paediatric Anaesthesia Service. She is currently the Lead for Simulation in the SingHealth Duke-NUS Anaesthesiology & Perioperative Services Academic Clinical Programme (ACP). She leads a core group of simulation enthusiasts that conducts multidisciplinary in situ simulation crisis management workshops for healthcare teams at various locations such as operating theatres and intensive care units within the Outram Campus, including SGH, National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS), Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS).

Dr Chong was among the first in SGH to expand the application of simulation beyond training and education, championing the use of process-oriented simulation for pandemic and malignant hyperthermia preparedness as well as testing of new facilities and work processes in SGH.

Dr Chong is passionate about debriefing, and is part of the interprofessional world-class international faculty team that teaches the Master Debriefer Course at The Debriefing Academy. Her latest project is translating simulation debriefing to clinical event debriefing, so as to improve perioperative patient outcomes and staff resilience.

Instructor, Singapore Neonatal Resuscitation Course (SNRC)

Dr Kong Juin Yee is a senior consultant neonatologist at KKH with keen interest in neonatal resuscitation, crisis resource management, patient safety and health quality. Her commitment to patient safety is evident in her introduction of regular multidisciplinary debriefing sessions following high-risk deliveries and neonatal resuscitations. Through these sessions, multiple collaborative improvement initiatives were implemented and recognized with Singhealth Target Zero Harm awards. She aspires to translate simulation video debriefing to clinical video debriefing, believing that the use of video recording and real-life data feedback allows for accurate reflective learning in trainees.

Understanding the value of hands-on experience, she introduced in-situ Neonatal Simulation Program using modified low-fidelity manikins, performed at frequent interval in real clinical settings. These sessions were conducted every other week in the delivery suites, operating theatre, neonatal intensive care unit and postnatal nurseries. This approach allows healthcare professionals of all disciplines to hone critical skills in a variety of clinical scenarios, ranging from perinatal complexities to postnatal emergencies.

Dr Kong completed the Simulation Instructor Course at the Center for Advanced Pediatric and Perinatal Education (CAPE) at Stanford University, USA and underwent crew resource management (CRM) training with the LifeWings Organization, USA. She is currently also pursuing a Masters in Patient Safety and Health Quality at National University of Singapore. Driven by her passion for global health, Dr Kong has also lent her expertise to the Train the Trainer program in Myanmar as part of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) initiative. By leveraging on simulation training, she hopes to train providers in low and middle-income countries to enhance patient care and safety, embodying her dedication to improving healthcare outcomes beyond Singapore.

Dr Elaine Tan Ching Ching is an emergency physician with a special interest in simulation-based healthcare education. She completed her fellowship at the Center for Medical Simulation, Boston, USA in 2013 and also holds a Masters of Science in Healthcare Professions Education.

While she started using simulation-based activities to train clinical skills proficiency and clinical reasoning, she now uses simulation predominantly for inter-professional education and inter-professional collaborative practice, as well as for quality improvement. She is a firm believer in the critical role of debriefing and actively advocates for faculty development.

In recent times, she has started exploring the transition of debriefing practices from simulated environments to actual clinical settings, to enhance staff education and instil a deeper sense of purpose. This evolution aims to foster a holistic and collaborative approach within the healthcare landscape.

Ms Sabrina Koh Bee Leng

In addition to being Campus Director (SKH) for SIMS, Sabrina is a nurse educator with critical care and medical/surgical clinical experience. She also has experience in academic and clinical nursing course curriculum development and in education administration as the education lead in National University Hospital and currently in Sengkang Health. Since 2004, Sabrina has designed, planned and established one academic and two hospital-based simulation centres in Singapore.

In 2013, she completed the year-long Nursing SimLead Programme by the National League for Nursing (NLN). She served as co-chair for the Asia Pacific Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare (APMSH) in 2013 and the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) 2016.

Sabrina has been involved in clinical education training surrounding clinical workflows, patient safety, teamwork and communication, and clinical escalation through multi-disciplinary simulation training. She is the course director and faculty for the Simulation Essentials for Healthcare Education (SEHE) simulation faculty course. She also conducts simulation faculty development programmes for regional simulation users focusing on scenario designs, facilitation and technical strategies.

Currently serving on the editorial advisory board for the National League for Nursing Center for Innovation in Simulation and Technology, she is a sub-committee member for Quality, and a site reviewer, Accreditation Committee, Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). She is also a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) under SSH. Sabrina is the President for the Pan Asia Simulation Society in Health (PASSH) and Vice-President for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Singapore (SSHS).
