Overview:

Costs are central to understanding infection and its control. We need to know what it would cost to deliver additional infection prevention measures, as well as what infections currently cost health services to treat and manage. A more complex challenge is estimating the future economic burden: what will infections cost health systems and populations if antimicrobial resistance becomes more widespread and new pathogens emerge. Yet, costs tell only part of the story. To make a compelling case for greater investment in infection prevention, we must also quantify the benefits, particularly reductions in mortality risk and improvements in quality of life.
