Preceptor Training Course

The course frames the partnership journey of thepreceptor and the trainee in the developmental experience for the learner; from preparation,onboarding into real world practice and the lived experience of precepting and nurturing thetrainee into a full-fledged pharmacist.

Target audience: Pharmacists who require to be trained as Pharmacy Preceptor
Pre-requisites: (if applicable): Year 3 pharmacists and beyond
Modality: Hybrid (asynchronous online + synchronous in-person)
Duration: 1.5 day

Learning objectives:

(Day 1)

1. Understand the goals of preceptorship, the roles and responsibilities and expectationsof a preceptor
2. Understand self-leadership to effectively lead others
3. Discuss the importance of ethical practice, professionalism, interpersonal andcommunication skills
4. Learn and practice how to precept and coach (include learning styles, teachingapproaches, questioning, clinical reasoning)
5. Learn and practice how to give feedback objectively and effectively
6. Learn and practice how to do assessment in the developmental continuum
7. Discuss the importance of motivational skills including handling of Generation Z
8. Learn the changes involved transiting to the new assessment methodology
9. Discuss the challenges of precepting and how to overcome them
10. Discuss the key success factors for the preceptor in achieving

(Day 2)

1. Outline the goals of preceptorship, the professional activities and expectations of apreceptor
2. Describe Professional Activities used for Pre-registration Training and Assessment
3. Conduct assessments using Mini-CEX and Case-based discussion
4. Review the portfolio of assessments to determine a supervision level
5. Facilitate constructive and reflective feedback using various feedback techniques to enhance learning.
