Dr Lai trained in anatomical and forensic pathology. After working for a few years as a forensic pathologist, he returned to hospital-based pathology at SGH in 2007 and embarked on a career as a clinician-educator. He led the establishment of the Pathology Residency Programme at SingHealth and held the post of Residency Director till 2016.
Currently, he continues to be part of the residency faculty team and is a member of the Clinical Competency Committee and Programme Evaluation Committee of the Residency Programme. Further, he was appointed Associate Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School where he served as Assistant Dean and Lead for the Pre-clinical phase of the four-year MD Programme until 2022.
He remains as the Lead for Pathology and College Master at the medical school. In addition, Dr Lai served a term as Director of the SingHealth Tissue Repository and assisted the cluster's efforts in transiting into the Human Biomedical Research Act.
From 2022 to present, Dr Lai serves as Chair of the Centralised Institutional Review Board at SingHealth. He is also the current Chief Editor of Proceedings of Singapore Healthcare, the cluster academic journal for SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre. Beyond the SingHealth institutions, Dr Lai is also President of the Medico-Legal Society.
