Caregiver to late mum with dementia, and a son with a mental health condition.

My journey with SGH began not just as a patient, but also as a caregiver—two perspectives that gave me a deep appreciation for the healthcare system. As a patient, I experienced the anxiety of not knowing what comes next—waiting, tests, and fear. I also encountered doctors who explained things patiently, never rushing me through my worries. The professionalism and empathy I received at SGH reminded me that care is not just clinical; it is also emotional and personal.

As a caregiver to my late mum, who had dementia and multiple admissions for pneumonia, and for her orthopaedic care, I saw a different side of the system. I became the voice and bridge between the medical team and my family. These experiences showed me how important it is for patients and families to feel seen, heard, and supported.

What inspired me to become a patient advocate is the realisation that not everyone knows how to speak up or navigate this complex journey. I advocate because healing is not just about treatment—it is about dignity, choice, and connection. I hope to help others find their voice around them.

Presentation Synopsis
HM 10 Partners in Care: Bridging Voices, Building Trust

This session presents a patient and caregiver perspective on protecting frontline healthcare staff, particularly in community and care settings. Drawing from lived experience, Evelyn will share insights on how communication, empathy, and mutual understanding can prevent escalation and foster safer care environments.

Key themes include the role of clear communication and expectation setting in managing tensions, recognising emotional triggers among patients and families—especially during high-stress or end-of-life situations—and the importance of empathy, dignity, and connection in building trust. A real-life reflection from a hospice setting will illustrate how miscommunication can lead to conflict, and how it could have been mitigated.

Evelyn will also highlight how patient and caregiver perspectives can bridge gaps between healthcare teams and families, supporting more respectful and collaborative care. Her sharing complements efforts in abuse and harassment (A&H) prevention by emphasising partnership, shared responsibility, and constructive engagement
