To encourage and facilitate interprofessional collaborative practice, the SingHealth Academy Colleges of Allied Health, Medicine and Nursing organised an Interprofessional Education (IPE) workshop on diabetes management for medical, pharmacy and nursing students. The inaugural run of the workshop was held on 15 December 2018, with 60 students in attendance. By bringing together the various health professions, the workshop provides better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each profession, while promoting collaboration to formulate a holistic care plan for diabetes management. The workshop also caters to undergraduate students and newly joined healthcare professionals, inculcating them with an understanding on the importance and effectiveness of collaborative practice.
Since then, the workshop has trained over 100 students from the various professions. The workshop includes interactive e-learning components, where students watch videos to understand the roles played by each of the healthcare professions when caring for patients with uncontrolled Type 1, 2 and Gestational Diabetes. Students also interviewed a standardised patient during the workshop, to deepen the new knowledge and skills that they had acquired.
