Nutrition Support
The Nutrition Support Service is offered by the Department of General Surgery. The service includes nutritional assessment and provision of support to meet the nutritional needs of patients. It also provides a home total parenteral nutrition programme and management of enteral feeding. The Nutrition Nurse Clinician aims to maintain and improve patients' nutritional status and metabolic environment, thereby preventing the effects of malnutrition and alter favorably the natural history or treatment of a specific disease. He / She also participates in reviewing procedure / protocols and policies, and conducts staff training programme. The Nutrition Support Team comprises physicians, surgeons, pharmacist, dietitian and nurse clinician. The team provides medical / nursing consultancy and clinical services to patients requiring nutrition support.
This course will update participants' skills and knowledge in nutritional care of patients - enteral and parenteral support.
At the clinical attachment, participants will learn:
Nutrition in various disease states
Specialised nutrition support - indications and requirements
Multi-disciplinary approach in the management of patient's nutritional care - role of the nutrition support team
Nursing services on techniques of enteral feeding and total parenteral nutrition
Nursing management of patients with enteral tube feeding and total parenteral nutrition
Home care teaching and preparation of nutritional support
