Writing It Right: Strategies For An Effective Research Manuscript

This workshop offers information on how to effectively prepare your manuscript for publication.

The first half covers the principles of writing effective opening sections (title, abstract and introduction) for your journal manuscript.

The second half covers the principles of writing compelling Methods, Results and Discussion sections for your journal manuscript. The basis of dealing with references in your journal manuscript (when, where and how should references be cited?) is also briefly outlined.

Learning Objectives

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Crafting an effective title for your journal manuscript
  • How to write a good abstract
  • Effectively structuring and writing your introduction
  • What to do and to avoid when drafting your Methods, Results and Discussion sections in your manuscript
  • Examples of signals to use to effectively deliver your message in each of these sections
  • Common problems encountered in the Methods, Results and Discussion sections
  • References: when, where and how to cite them
At the end of the workshop, attendees should understand the basis of effective writing for a scientific manuscript from the beginning to end. A series of exercises reinforces the concepts imparted.
