Writing Research Right: Practical Advice For an Effective Research Paper

This workshop offers advice on how to effectively write and publish a clinical research journal article. The workshop covers the principles of writing effective and compelling sections (Title, Abstract, introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) for your journal article. The basis of dealing with references in your article (when, where and how should references be cited?) is also briefly outlined, as is the usage of generative AI tools for writing your article. At the same time, we will outline the principles of constructing effective graphic elements for your journal article.

Learning Objectives

 

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Basic principles of good scientific writing
  • Crafting an effective title for your journal article
  • How to write a good abstract
  • Effectively structuring and writing your Introduction
  • What to do and to avoid when drafting your Methods, Results and Discussion sections in your article
  • References: when, where and how to cite them
  • Use of generative AI in scientific writing
  • Basic principles of a good graphic element
  • How to construct effective tables and graphs
  • Difference between vector and bitmap graphics
  • Optimal file formats to use when preparing vector and bitmap images

 

The workshop will be divided into two half-day sessions, with Part 1 covering Title, Abstract, Introduction and Methods, and Part 2 covering Results, Discussion, generative AI in writing and Graphic Elements.
 
At the end of the workshop, participants should understand the basis of effective writing for a scientific article from the beginning to end, as well as the basic principles of creating effective graphic elements. A series of exercises to reinforce the concepts imparted will be carried out.

Administrators, Clinicians, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals starting out in scientific research and preparing a manuscript for submission to a journal.

He has helped edit more than a hundred journal manuscripts and has helped researchers obtain more than $82 million in research funding by improving their grant proposals.

Ms Sukhvinder Kaur

About the Trainer:
Sukhvinder Kaur has served as managing editor for the Proceedings of Singapore Healthcare for many years. She has extensive experience in writing and publishing. With her experience in editing and processing manuscripts for the scientific journal, she is well placed to give pointers on how to prepare your manuscript.
