First Impressions Last: Getting Off To A Good Start In Your Manuscript

There is an old advertising line that states “you never get a second chance to make a good first impression”. The title, abstract and introduction of your manuscript have the power to influence the first impressions of your work by a reader, reviewer or editor. This workshop is intended to assist beginning researchers understand the principles of writing effective opening sections (title, abstract and introduction) for their journal manuscripts. The workshop consists of two hours of instruction.

Learning Objectives

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Crafting an effective title for your journal manuscript
  • How to write a good abstract
  • Effectively structuring and writing your introduction

At the end of the workshop, attendees should understand the basic principles of behind developing arresting titles, effectively condensing information in abstracts, as well as convincingly setting the scene with the introduction. A series of exercises reinforces the concepts imparted.

Sukhvinder Kaur has served as managing editor for the Proceedings of Singapore Healthcare for many years. She has extensive experience in writing and publishing. With her experience in editing and processing manuscripts for the scientific journal, she is well placed to give pointers on how to prepare your manuscript.
