Basic Medical Terminology Course

This programme aims to enable participants to better understand and practice the correct terminologies and approved abbreviations used in the hospital setting. 

This course is organised by National Heart Centre Singapore. 

Course Outline: 

  • Identify the relationships among cells, tissues, organs and system. 
  • List the 10 systems of human body. 
  • Name the 3 structures of each system. 
  • Explain the significance of understanding the basis of medical terminology. 
  • Identify the elements of medical terms. 
  • Define the elements of prefix, suffix and root words. 
  • Define root words pertaining to anatomy and physiology. 
  • Pronounce medical terms accurately. 
  • Recognise common abbreviations used in the hospitals. 
  • Demonstrate correct technique in separating word arts according to its pronunciation. 
  • Interpret common abbreviations used. 
  • Apply abbreviations in relation to the work. 
  • Define suffixes pertaining to surgical procedure, disease and specialities. 
  • Define prefixes pertaining to number, position, directions and degree. 
  • Combine word elements to form medical terms. 
  • Spell medical terms correctly. 
  • Categorise terms into its specialties.
