Professor Bridget Wills is Professor
of Tropical Medicine at the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health,
University of Oxford, United Kingdom (UK), and Vice-Director of the Oxford
University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. After
broad training in general medicine, paediatrics and infectious diseases in the
UK and Malawi, Dr Wills joined OUCRU in 1997. She has been based in Ho Chi Minh
City since then, where her primary focus is on clinical dengue research, in
particular work to improve diagnosis, classification, and management of dengue.
As the Head of the Dengue Research Group, she coordinates a
multi-faceted programme of research, based around pivotal randomised controlled
intervention trials for dengue integrated with observational studies aimed at
a) elucidating the underlying pathogenesis of the vasculopathy that is the
hallmark of severe disease, b) understanding transmission dynamics and local
and regional disease epidemiology, and c) defining immunological responses to natural
infections. She also works on other severe paediatric infections common in the
Southeast Asian region, including enterovirus 71 related hand foot and mouth
disease, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis B and neonatal tetanus.
