Dr. Haywood L. Brown is a native of North Carolina. He received his undergraduate degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro and his Medical Degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Knoxville, Tennessee, followed by subspecialty fellowship training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine/Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Brown is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Dr. Brown returned to North Carolina in 2002 as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Prior to that time he was Professor of OB/Gyn at Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN.

Dr. Brown has been actively involved with academic medicine and the education of students and residents throughout his career. After six years as a faculty member at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Dr. Brown joined the faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Indiana University and rose to the rank of Professor with tenure in 1990. He served as the Director of High Risk Obstetrics at Wishard Memorial Hospital and was the Associate Director of Medical Affairs for eighteen months.

Dr. Brown has been active in his community and nationally. He has served as the Co-Medical Director for the Indianapolis Healthy Babies Project and was active with the Indiana Perinatal Network, which is dedicated to decreasing infant mortality and the racial disparity for infant mortality. He has also chaired the steering committee for the District of Columbia National Institutes of Health Initiative on Infant Mortality Reduction. As a Maternal Fetal Medicine (High-Risk Pregnancy) Specialist, Dr. Brown is especially committed to the care of women at high risk for adverse pregnancy outcome, particularly those disadvantaged.

Dr. Brown has well published over 100 papers in his field of Obstetrics and Gynecology and serves on many state and national committees. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He is the Past Chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Section of the National Medical Association. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and is immediate past President of the Society. He is immediate past President of the American Gynecological Obstetrical Society (AGOS). He serves as a Director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which is the certifying organization for Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has been a member of the Scientific Program Committee for the Annual Clinical Meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Black Enterprise magazine named Dr. Brown as one of the “Top 100 Black Physicians in the Country”. Dr. Brown most recently was honored with a lifetime achievement Award from the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the 2012 Annual Meeting and is president-elect of the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.

Dr. Brown is married to Bobbie Brown and they have two sons, Joshua and Gabriel.
