Welcome to SingHealth Duke-NUS Scientific Congress 2012

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organising Committee, it is our pleasure to invite you to the SingHealth Duke-NUS Scientific Congress 2012. This is the second time our two organisations have joined forces to showcase the most exciting and cutting-edge advances in Singapore medicine.

The theme for our 2012 Congress is "Defining Tomorrow's Medicine", which also happens to be SingHealth's vision. We view these three words as an inspiration and challenge for all healthcare practitioners and biomedical researchers, young and old. In Defining, we seek to set the standards and benchmarks for local and international clinical practice, sharpened through the rigors of academic medicine. Tomorrow's reminds us that medicine is never static but constantly evolving, with shifting global conditions and complex social trends bringing about new disease conditions and healthcare concerns. Finally, Medicine reminds us that patients, and patient-oriented services, must remain at the centre of all our activities, and that we are ultimately judged by the impact we effect on patients, at the individual or national level.

The Organising Committee has assembled an exciting line-up of speakers who will present thought-provoking discussions in a variety of different areas, including the application of genomics to medicine, latest advances in the management of chronic diseases, interdisciplinary management in complex maxillo-facial reconstructions, and bioethical challenges faced by clinicians and researchers in academia-industry collaborations. In addition, we have also organised a range of workshops on integrated care, obstetrics, allied health and nursing, before and after the main Congress.

We encourage all participants to submit abstracts for the Congress. Arising from a partnership between SingHealth and Duke-NUS, the Congress will be one of the largest and most distinguished healthcare related scientific events of the year, involving eight SingHealth institutions and a renowned graduate medical school. Substantial attendance is also expected from overseas participants and the healthcare industry. As such, the Congress provides an excellent opportunity for all SingHealth and Duke-NUS members to interact and share their experiences.

We would like to thank our committee members and staff of SingHealth Academy, as well as all those who have helped in one way or another for their time and effort in organising this Congress. On behalf of the committee, we wish everyone a fruitful and exciting meeting. See you at the Congress!
