Overview:
This presentation will highlight two randomised controlled trials examining lifestyle interventions to improve physical activity across the pregnancy and postpartum continuum. The first, the Integrated Hyperglycaemia Incentivised Postnatal Surveillance (I-HIPS) Study, focusses on women with a history of gestational diabetes and evaluates whether a structured lifestyle intervention can improve physical activity and support the long-term prevention of type 2 diabetes in the postpartum period.
The second, the eHealth Integrated Maternal Physical Activity Programme in Prenatal Care Trial (e-IMPACT), addresses physical activity during pregnancy by embedding a digital health intervention within routine antenatal care for women with overweight or obesity. The intervention integrates wearable activity monitoring with behavioural strategies to promote physical activity during pregnancy. A key vision of e-IMPACT is to translate the Guidelines on Physical Activity & Exercise in Pregnancy, developed by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), into routine clinical practice through implementation of an evidence-based, scalable digital health approach.
Together, these trials illustrate complementary approaches to lifestyle intervention across two critical windows in women’s health—pregnancy and the postpartum period. The presentation will discuss how behavioural interventions, digital health, and wearable technologies can be integrated into clinical care to support sustainable improvements in physical activity and potentially reduce longer-term maternal cardiometabolic risk.
