Senior Scientist
Bioinformatics Institute, A*STAR
Dr Sandy Tze-Minn Mak is a scientist at the Bioinformatics Institute (BII), A*STAR. With a background spanning pandemic response, diagnostics, and genomic surveillance, she has played key roles in Singapore’s H1N1, Zika, Mpox and COVID-19 laboratory responses. This included coordination, developing early diagnostics, and embedding genomics into national epidemiological investigations. Her work has supported public health decision-making and contributed to the World Health Organization’s technical guidance on SARS-CoV-2 sequencing.
At BII, Dr Mak currently focusses on pathogen genomics. She plays a role in tool development by the GISAID Data Science Centre, ensuring their applicability for public health use. She also advances capacity-building efforts through the GISAID Academy, alongside collaborations with the Asia Pathogen Genomics Initiative and the NUS Centre for Infectious Disease Emergency Response.
