Overview:

Healthcare is often reactive to incidents and adverse events or patient complaints. This is often results in difficulty to plan ahead and duplicative caution, reminders and warnings. In the Risk management thinking and methods it looks at issues before they occur. This requires both on the ground experience, depth of understanding of the process and honesty. It also takes maturity to understand what risk are consequential but at the same time balancing the desire to eliminate all risks. Being over cautious and risk averse can also cause paralysis of the system as well as disengage staff when there are too many unwieldy rules and procedures to follow. This can also lead to work arounds and normalisation of deviance. A good balance of proactive prediction and workable solutions and timely and frequent reviews have to be taken.
