Clean and Disinfect vs Disinfect

Date: 14 Oct 2026 | Time: 1025 - 1045 | Venue: Level 1, L1-S1, Academia

Speaker: Ms Pan Lina

Healthcare environments face increasing challenges with antimicrobial-resistant organisms, making effective infection prevention and control (IPC) more critical than ever. This presentation examines the fundamental principles of cleaning and disinfection, addressing the common misconception that disinfectant wipes provide adequate cleaning and disinfection in a single step.Through a case study of Candidozyma auris contamination in an ENT clinic, we will explore how this multidrug-resistant fungus persists on hospital equipment and environmental surfaces despite routine cleaning protocols. The case demonstrates the limitations of relying solely on disinfectant wipes and highlights the importance of understanding the distinct roles of cleaning versus disinfection.

The presentation will clarify why the two-step process—thorough cleaning followed by appropriate disinfection—remains the gold standard for infection control. We will examine how organic matter, biofilms, and surface characteristics can compromise the efficacy of combination products and discuss evidence-based strategies for selecting appropriate cleaning and disinfection methods.Healthcare workers will gain practical insights into optimising their infection prevention practices, understanding when 2-in-1 products are appropriate, and recognising situations requiring enhanced protocols. This knowledge is essential for protecting patients and staff whilst adapting to emerging infectious threats in our evolving healthcare setting.
