Overview:

Endoscopy reprocessing units face converging needs for enhanced infection control standards, advances in reprocessing equipment and sterilisation technology, a heightened need to enhance skillsets and competencies, and the push for green endoscopy. Reprocessing services and facilities will need evolve to meet these demands. This session will discuss how endoscopy units can stay abreast in the evolving landscape of endoscopy practice and endoscopy reprocessing.

Based on Spaulding classification standards, semi-critical devices that come into contact with mucous membrane require HLD while critical devices such as those used for procedures that penetrate vascular systems like ERCP, will require sterilisation. The revised ANSI/AAMI ST91:2021 standard recommends sterilisation of high-risk endoscopes (such as duodenoscopes, bronchoscopes) whenever possible. These factors must be considered when planning to upgrade legacy infrastructure and facilities in the future.

Reprocessing units are significant consumers of water, energy, and single-use consumables. The BSG/JAG/Centre for Sustainable Health joint consensus on green endoscopy has driven wider adoption of paper post-procedure cups, electronic documentation to cut paper use, and reduction of unnecessary single-use items. Balancing infection control rigor with green initiatives will be a key strategy for all reprocessing facilities in the future.

Technology and new techniques are changing practice. Robotics and artificial intelligence are beginning to reshape reprocessing workflows in practice, not just in theory. Robotics equipment is increasingly used in endoscopy procedures while evolving AI-assisted endoscope inspection technology adds verification without extending workflow time. This means that the endoscope reprocessing facilities of the future will need to incorporate the needs of a changing landscape. Robotics and AI applications alongside predictive analytics for equipment maintenance and staffing optimisation, will be a key consideration when planning for the future.

This presentation synthesises infection control, equipment and sterilisation innovation, risk management, sustainability, and emerging robotics and AI technology into a forward-looking model for endoscopy reprocessing services. Practical ideas to strengthen patient safety, manage operational risk, and advance sustainability goals will be discussed. A holistic strategy will be needed to manage the evolving landscape.
