Session 1.2.3
Look after yourself before you take care of your patients
Date: 13 Oct 2026 | Time: 1040 - 1100 | Venue: Level 1, L1-S1, Academia
Speaker: Dr Lim John Wah
Healthcare workers (HCW) are central to delivering safe, compassionate, and high‑quality patient care, yet the nature of work exposes them to preventable occupational risks. This presentation emphasises the core message: “Look after yourself before you take care of your patients.” Two important areas will be highlighted—occupational skin disease (OSD) and influenza prevention.
OSD is one of the most common occupational diseases among HCW. Frequent handwashing, repeated use of alcohol-based hand rubs, and prolonged glove wear can lead to contact dermatitis, which cause discomfort, reduced dexterity, limit clinical performance and lead to work absences. Practical strategies – including proper hand hygiene techniques, regular use of moisturisers and early reporting of symptoms – are essential to maintaining skin health and preventing complications.
Influenza remains another significant occupational hazard. HCW can contract influenza at work and may transmit it to vulnerable patients. Annual influenza vaccination reduces risk of influenza infection, minimises absenteeism, and strengthens patient safety by lowering transmission risks. High vaccine uptake reflects a professional commitment to both personal well-being and healthcare quality.
By prioritising self-care through skin protection and vaccination, healthcare workers help ensure a safer workforce and a safer environment for the patients who depend on them.
