Overview:

Hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) remains a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, prolonged hospitalisation, and healthcare costs worldwide. Increasing evidence demonstrates that the oral cavity acts as a reservoir for respiratory pathogens, particularly in frail and medically compromised patients. This presentation reviews current evidence supporting structured oral care protocols and provides an overview of preventive strategies for oral care to reduce HAP. By strengthening oral hygiene practices within routine care, the incidence of HAP can be reduced, improving patient outcomes and decreasing overall healthcare burden through a low-cost, evidence-based approach.
