Environmental sustainability in healthcare involves reducing the environmental footprint of medical services – such as carbon emissions, waste, pollution and energy consumption – while maintaining high standards of patient care and safety. While necessary for safety, excessive or non-evidence-based IPC practices can drive substantial waste. Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) plays a critical role to maximise the safety benefits of IPC while minimising its environmental footprint that contribute to long-term climate damage.
