Polished Defences: Surface Hygiene for Prevention of HAI

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a significant threat to patient safety, causing extended hospital stays, increased morbidity and mortality, and substantial economic burden. This talk will explore the critical role of surface hygiene in preventing HAIs. We will delve into the modes of transmission for HAIs, highlighting the importance of contaminated surfaces as reservoirs for pathogens. Key principles for effective surface disinfection will be discussed, including selecting appropriate disinfectants, proper cleaning techniques, and environmental cleaning protocols. The talk will emphasise the importance of a multifaceted approach to surface hygiene, encompassing hand hygiene, proper use of personal protective equipment, and cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces. By the end of this talk, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of surface hygiene in preventing HAIs.
