Infectious Diseases Residency Programme

Banner-ID.jpgAbout the Programme

Infectious Diseases (ID) is a specialty that traverses the traditional boundaries of organ-specific specialties.

ID physicians are first and foremost, competent in general internal medicine; but at the same time, they are knowledgeable about surgical issues, including subspecialty surgical problems such as those in neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cardiothoracic surgery and ophthalmology.

ID physicians have an intimate knowledge of the workings of the other specialties, in addition to their understanding of infection, infectious diseases, the immune response, and anti-infectives. This makes the ID physician a valuable member of the healthcare team.

If you are looking for a career in medicine that spans specialties, you should consider ID. Ideally, you should have a strong interest in infectious diseases and full medical registration with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). You should also have completed an ACGME-I accredited Internal Medicine Residency Programme.

Additionally, in order to be fully focused on ID training, you should have passed the intermediate examinations MRCP (UK) or equivalent.

You must be a good team player with excellent interpersonal skills and an academic mind, plus a positive outlook and enthusiasm for managing complex issues and perplexing patients. You must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills and an academic mind.

Why Choose Infectious Disease?

Exposure to Wide Case-mix in Infectious Diseases
A major focus of our programme is on inpatient consultations from all medical and surgical disciplines at the two major training facilities - Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and Changi General Hospital (CGH). Residents will be exposed to a very wide case-mix at the two hospitals to help you hone your clinical skills and experience.

Comprehensive Training in Infectious Diseases
As with most subspecialty training programmes, our programme offers a combination of teaching and management rounds. You will participate in patient-based rounds, in which current cases are presented for discussion. The comprehensive discussions may include a range of issues, such as interpretation of clinical data, differential diagnosis, specific management of the patient, the appropriate use of anti-infectives, the incorporation of evidence and patient values in clinical decision making and disease prevention.

Your Career Prospects & Development
