In this day and age, care of patients involved many disciplines and many health professionals. So it is important for health professionals to come together to learn about diseases and how we manage these diseases together, rather than learn in their own professional silos.

Lunch Plenary II Redefining Academic Medicine
|
Track type: Plenary |
|
Duration: 30 minutes |
|
Location: Academia, Auditorium |
Speaker: Prof Victor Dzau
There is a need for transformation to address the global challenges in health and medicine, and Academic Medical Centres (AMCs) must play a key role in leading this transformation. To date, Academic Medicine has provided leadership in conducting innovative research, training the clinician-scientists, and providing complex care. However, society expects more from AMCs today. The rapid advances in science and technology have offered significant opportunities. In the future, AMCs will have to redefine themselves to focus, not only on discovery science, but also on developing healthcare delivery science, improving science and regulatory science, as well as information science and big data. Changes are needed in how we provide the best care for patients, addressing their health needs through population health management. The AMC of the future will form closer partnerships with the community, our patients, and other disciplines of the broader University. Academic Medicine has certainly evolved since the days of proprietary trade schools, and the evolution will continue as we find new ways to educate the provider of the future to achieve the goals of cost, quality, and access.
Prof Dzau will talk about the current landscape of health and medicine, and the key elements needed for academic medicine to continue to flourish.
