Welcome

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are excited to announce that the SingHealth Duke-NUS Scientific Congress 2014 will be held on 5th and 6th September at Academia.

Held for the third time, the Congress is a signature event that showcases the joint academic partnership between SingHealth and Duke-NUS. The theme for this year, “Academic Medicine – Transforming Vision Into Reality”, aptly reflects our transformative journey in Academic Medicine. The future of Medicine lies in the present. It is through progressive innovations in research and education that we are able to advance Medicine and improve care for our patients.

The organising committee has put together a scientific programme that has something for everyone – from basic scientists and clinicians to nursing and allied health professionals. We have assembled a series of distinguished speakers that we are very excited about. Our keynote speaker Prof Elizabeth Armstrong, the founder of the Harvard Macy Institute for medical education, will be sharing with us strategies that leaders adopt to nurture innovative professionals.

Other highlights of the Congress include Assoc Prof Brian Smith from Duke University who will talk about his experiences in conducting practice-changing clinical trials in the pediatric setting. We also have ready a stellar group of local speakers, including Prof Stuart Cook, one of our new SingHealth STAR investigators who will speak about the genetics of heart disease; and Prof Freddy Boey from NTU, the recipient of last year’s President’s Science and Technology Medal, who will educate us on his experiences in translating basic research ideas to clinical and commercial reality.  We have also incorporated additional education sessions for educators, and dedicated a residency track to showcase the research work of our residents. With a line-up of more than 40 plenary sessions and symposiums, the Congress will cover the breadth and depth of medical care, innovation, education and research.

In addition, the quality of Abstract submissions this year has been very encouraging, indicating to us that the Academic Medicine vision is taking  root in SingHealth and Duke-NUS, and we are reaping the fruits of our  passion and commitment.

It is fitting that this year’s Congress will be held in Academia – the icon of Academic Medicine. We believe the venue is the ideal environment for the convergence of minds, and will encourage collaborative learning and interconnectivity among the participants. Whether you are a doctor, nurse, allied health professional, researcher, educator, administrator, resident or student, we have no doubt that the two-day Congress will inspire you to forge ahead in the Academic Medicine journey to define tomorrow’s medicine. We encourage you to register for the Congress and watch this space for more exciting updates coming your way!
