Fundamentals of Instructional Serious Game Design and Development (SG 101) - ONLINE


This course is specially designed for faculty who want to upgrade their digital capability skills set and expand their know-how to apply innovative digital tools in their training programmes, thus creating an immersive and engaging experience for learners and achieving the specific outcome(s). 


Course Objectives

  • Recognize that although an instructional serious game is designed for the purpose of enhancing user engagement and immersive experience, it requires an instructional (outcome) design approach with a specific learning objective.
  • Describe what is evidence-based game design and the fundamental of instructional serious game design.
  • Construct a game’s development process from conceptual design, its elements, and their relation to each other based on the games purpose.
  • Describe the importance of realism of environment and the applications of avatars in the instructional serious game.
  • Learn how to initiate a serious games project within your organisation
  • Demonstrate how an instructional serious games budget is constructed.
  • Construct a workplan using a Gantt chart to demonstrate how an instructional serious game project is monitored from conceptualisation to final sign off.
  • Equip to deploy an instructional serious game with the understanding of instructional serious game efficacy, game-based assessment, and game-play data.


Course Outline

The online course is over a spread of 3 weeks. Participants will complete 6 sessions (3.5 hours) over 6 evenings. This is supplemented with self-reading, quiz and project work. There will be an assessment at the end of the workshop which includes the project work and a participant interview session.


The various sessions examines the uses of game elements, game mechanics and serious games within learning environments. Learners will be introduced to evidence-based game design. Aspects of serious games explored include intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation, feedback loops, the role of story and characters, game elements, game mechanics and game thinking and the application of points and leader boards. Learners will be given an assignment to develop an instructional game project on the workplan and budget. Emphasis is given to the design, implementation, and assessment of the instructional game.

  • Faculty who are responsible for designing programmes and would like to apply innovative digital tools in their training programmes.

  • 6 sessions over 6 evenings – Tues & Thurs @ 6.30 pm – 10.00 pm
    (2nd Sep, 7th Sep, 9th Sep, 14th Sep, 16th Sep, 21st Sep 2021)


  • Assessment Interview - 1 hour session between @ 6.30 pm – 9.30 pm
    (23rd Sep, 28th Sep OR 30th Sep 2021);
