Hear From Our Residents

Dr Joella Ang Xiao Hong
O&G Resident, Year 2018
NUS YLL SoM Alumna

"The mentors and Faculty are always willing to teach and motivate and there is something new to learn with every single encounter."

I have been in the SingHealth Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) Residency for the last four years and the learning experience has been stellar. I feel well supported during the various clinic sessions and well supervised during my operating theatre and labour ward training. The mentors and Faculty are always willing to teach and motivate and there is something new to learn with every single encounter.

I feel that the Residency prepares me well for life as an obstetrician and gynaecologist. The best thing about SingHealth is that we train in two different institutions giving us the necessary breadth and depth of cases that a single institution may not be able to provide. As a surgical specialist, hands-on and experiential learning is important to hone our skills and SingHealth is able to provide the caseload for our training. SingHealth offers an excellent clinical learning environment for all Residents and medical students alike. In addition, there are multiple opportunities to teach and delve into cutting edge research that will develop one as a specialist.

In O&G, there is a wealth of exciting career possibilities such as in general obstetrics and gynaecology, teaching, research and subspecialties such as gynae-oncology, urogynaecology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive medicine and minimally invasive techniques. New discoveries and frontiers are being challenged daily and there is so much more to learn and explore.

"Mentors in the programme have encouraged me to look ahead to the future and have gone to great lengths to cultivate and develop interests beyond daily work, especially in the field of research, leadership and education."

I returned from London after working for a few years in O&G and completing a PhD in reproductive biology. I chose the SingHealth Residency as I was excited to join the largest O&G cluster in Singapore with its heavy case load and extensive case-mix. Under the guidance of experienced Clinicians and mentors, we tackle challenging cases on a daily basis which makes work very exciting. The training is very structured allowing us a foundation in general O&G and early exposure to subspecialty training. I feel the SingHealth Residency has really given me an opportunity to grow not only as a doctor but also as an individual. Mentors in the programme have encouraged me to look ahead to the future and have gone to great lengths to cultivate and develop interests beyond daily work, especially in the field of research, leadership and education. I feel this has made work more meaningful, and slowly but surely, is preparing me for a long-lasting career in O&G.

"The programme is dedicated to making training supervised and fair and we have seen many positive changes and improvements over the last few years."

Joining the SingHealth O&G Residency Programme has been an enriching and invigorating experience! I have had a multitude of learning opportunities which have really given me different and varied outlooks and perspectives on patient care.

The programme is dedicated to making training supervised and fair and we have seen many positive changes and improvements over the last few years. SingHealth Residency has the advantage of having the largest O&G training programme and patient numbers in Singapore, which are fundamental in developing our Residents' clinical skills and acumen.

What I enjoy most about my career now is the ability to provide targeted and personal care for each and every one of my patients, while striving to become a role model and leader for my juniors.

"I am grateful to the SingHealth Residency for the endless opportunities that have shaped me into who I am today and will be in the future."

I have received outstanding teaching while in SingHealth Residency training. We have weekly national training programmes as well as hospital based didactic sessions tailored to our needs. I have been very fortunate to meet many supportive seniors and mentors who have given me many opportunities to learn and become a better obstetrician gynaecologist.

I chose to do my programme with SingHealth O&G Residency because of its comprehensive training program and for the opportunity to train in the best institutions in Singapore.

Currently as a senior Resident, I thoroughly enjoy working in our labour wards, outpatient clinics and operating theatres. I also enjoy my clinical research study in the use of cervical ripening balloon in the induction of labour. I endeavour to teach my juniors in the same way that my seniors have taught me.

In addition, I got accepted into the SingHealth Leadership Residency Programme, which has helped me to develop my leadership skills.

I am grateful to the SingHealth Residency for the endless opportunities that have shaped me into who I am today and will be in the future.

"Our mentors remain dedicated and committed to the education of residents even if it means putting in extra hours at work and time off with their family."

The learning experience with SingHealth Residency has been fulfilling from day one. The programme is designed to help us master the art and science of O&G in a stepwise fashion. Our mentors remain dedicated and committed to the education of residents even if it means putting in extra hours at work and time off with their family.

I had no issues choosing SingHealth Residency as SingHealth remains as the most important healthcare institution for Singapore. I am also most grateful to my Programme Director (PD) and Associate PDs for their help and advice in all aspects of the training and am thankful that I made this decision to join SingHealth Residency.
