An Unexpectedly Good Read

Academic papers, textbooks, past-year question papers... Do medical peeps still read for leisure in this time and age? (Sorry, The Straits Times isn’t counted... Neither is counted!)

This author chanced upon a gem of a read in, of all places, an army camp medical centre!

"Cautionary Tales - Authentic Case Histories From Medical Practice", by John Murtagh, is one of the few medical books that you can probably curl up in bed with, and not feel like bludgeoning yourself with it.

Bound in its striking red hardcover, the iPad-sized piece of literature is written in a casual first-person encounter, short-case scenario format. The stories in it chart a variety of cases the author has come across during his extensive medical profession. Through personable stories and humor, Murtagh highlights interesting and key medical facts in bite-sized portions that make reading a real joy.

Not just a book for the general practitioner, the tidbits of information in this collection will surely also be useful for the hospitalist in you.

Happy reading!
