About Residency Training in SingHealth
In SingHealth, it is our people that sets us apart. Just like a close-knit family, we support and grow alongside one another and with a strong culture of giving back and mentoring the next generation. Residents can look forward to generous sharing of medical knowledge, expertise and skills from faculty and seniors, while being assured that their welfare is looked after.
Additionally, as the largest SI for Residency programmes in Singapore, SingHealth’s hospitals and institutions offer high clinical and diverse patient case load in specialties and subspecialties, which is invaluable in expanding clinical knowledge and expertise. Rotations to the various hospitals and institutions offer wider exposure and opportunities to hone essential clinical skills.
Despite the current COVID-19 situation, the intake number for AY2020 and selection process remains unaffected.
Selection is still based on merit. Residency training will still proceed as usual, with some temporary changes. For example, new Residents joining in July 2020 from other SIs may have to stay within their current institutions for the time being, due to the cross-cluster restriction. However, training will still continue with Residents undergoing the required training curriculum under the care of their ‘foster programmes’, until the cross-cluster restriction is lifted.
Application to Residency training is managed by Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH). You can find out more information regarding the Residency application processes and timeline on the Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH) website.
Besides being academically and clinically competent, it is important to demonstrate qualities such as positive attitude, integrity, resilience and teamwork. These are some of the common qualities that the programmes look out for in their Residents.
It is strongly recommended that you do clinical postings of your preferred specialty in the early phases of medical school, as well as to participate in research projects from the specialty, if available. This will give you better perspective and exposure while allowing the Faculty and Residents to know you better.
Each Residency programme may have different requirements when recruiting its Residents. Do speak with the Programme Directors (PDs) or Faculty to find out more.
In order for the Faculty to know you better, you should aim to do postings in the specialty of your choice at SingHealth’s hospitals and institutions. However, if that’s not possible, you are encouraged to connect with the PD of the programme. Although this may not necessarily guarantee you a place, the initiative and effort taken to express your interest will reflect positively on your passion and commitment for the specialty.
Residency programmes with small intake numbers may be competitive but there is still a possibility of getting accepted. A few tips to increase your chances include:
Shortlist the potential specialties that interest you, and whenever possible, aim to do clinical postings in these specialties in your clinical years of medical school. Try not to rush into applying for a Residency programme, and consider doing Medical Officer (MO) postings after housemanship or PGY1 to give yourself an opportunity to find out which specialty is the right one for you. We also have a guide to choosing the right medical speciality here.
IMGs may apply for SingHealth Residency as a conditionally registered doctor.
For IMGs applying for SingHealth Residency, the following requirements must first be satisfied:
*While the above tips may increase your chances of getting accepted, it does not necessarily guarantee you a place in SingHealth Residency.
